Pretty arty, but wheres the story? |
|
...it needs to be said....TORMENT has NO story! Sure, the artwork is stunning if you like that sort of thing, but what about the characters? No Spidey wisecracks, no clever dialogue, straight faced, overly pretentious narration, MJ relegated to a pointless side role (why bother having her in the story at all if you werent going to use her?), The Lizard (while given a truly creepy visual makeover - one of the books few plus-points) has just become a mindless killing machine, completely forgetting the Lizard who was established years earlier as a complex, thinking character...I could go on... I know Im probably in the minority and I confess Im not particularly a fan of MacFarlanes art, or even the tone he was trying to put across in this book, but if its a darker, more adult Spider-Man story youre after (which still retains the classic Spider-Man feel without excessive cheese factor) then go for Kravens Last Hunt - better story, better script, better characters and a couple of cool spider-munching shots. My copy of Torment went straight on Ebay a week after I got it! Only reccommended to die hard MacFarlaners. But chances are theyve all got it already.

A true masterpiece by a true master. |
Spider-man Torment set the tone for what Todd McFarlane was capable of doing on his own. This story is the result of McFarlanes brilliant artwork and equally icredible script.McFarlane brings new life into an old villain: The Lizzard. The Lizzard however is under the spell of a mysterious character. Will these two bring and end to our hero Spider-man? Well, it sertainly looked like it!!

Todd McFarlanes Spiderman is a work of art!!! |
Torment, is one of the best spider-man titles that I have ever read. I may be a bit biased since I love Todd McFarlanes artwork but, even so I was captivated by the first page and I could not put it down. Through reading Torment, you will see some of the best representations of one of Spideys most dangerous villians "the Lizard". You will also be drawn into the storyline and feel the "Torment" that Spidey goes through on his night of doom. One word sums up this book: "excellent".
