A comprehensive and easy to read instruction manual
Having read a number of books in the quest for decent instruction on how to ride a motorbike and use the controls skillfully (including Roadcraft and Twist of the Wrist) this was by far the best. It gave full detail on not only how to enter and steer into bends but also how to exit them. Concise detail on braking and how to use the throttle in all situations was excellent. Above all, the book could be read in nice bite-sized chunks without the need to work ones way through any padding out of the text. I bought it to improve my road riding but I am sure track riders will find it equally as good. All the instruction and advice is appropriate for any type of motorcycle or style of rider.

Best of its kind?!
Aimed at people who wish to have fast (but safe) road riding fun. Loads of great information, ideas, drills to practise/improve your day to day sportsbike riding.
Primary focus is on road riding, but there are many parallels to track/racing techniques, and a useful section about trackdays, including preparation etc.

Illustrations and graphics are up to date (Ducati 999,Rossi/RC411V, R1s ... etc) but as well as being very "aesthetically pleasing" they actually serve their purpose!

Nicks ideas seem to be a collection of the best bits from all the riding and research he has done as a successful racer in the US, and a long time biking journalist. Nick presents his ideas to you in a clear and interesting book ... for comparison, I have read all of Keith Codes dull, confusing and patronising writings ("Twist of the Wrist ..."), and would advise you to buy this book before considering any of Codes!
Enjoy ...

PS For more about Nicks ideas and style of writing, search the web under the authors name for articles he wrote called The Pace.

Good book, but not a nice guy!
On recent holiday, I read this book - partly as a holiday read and also because I ride a Harley-Davidson. I read a lot of biographies and many times get inspiration from the main characters; I always look for something in someone to take with me when Ive finished the book.

Sonny Bargers "party and ride" approach to life seems to have been at the expense of everybody else - however, he tells it as it was and his no holds barred approach is at least honest if not commendable. Hes no Heavens Angel - thats for sure. I felt that throughout the book, Sonny should somehow apologise for his drug-using, police-hating, brawling, bullying lifestyle - but I knew we wouldnt get this. I think the only thing he regrets is smoking so many Camels.

I found the book jumped around a lot and also assumed that the reader already knew a lot about HAMC (which I didnt). Many characters made brief appearances and it was sometimes hard to follow whom they were. There is genuine sadness at the loss of so many of his comrades.

I would recommend this book to others who want to get inside the mind of hell raisers like Sonny.

As for taking something from this book? In a fight, Sonny is definitely the kind of guy you want on your side. If he is your "brother" - then your enemies are his, doesnt matter what the cause of enmity is about. The Army probably blew its chances of winning the Vietnam War when they kicked him out!
