Fun for some and a struggle for the others

I honestly thought that Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance contained no importance to me when I was reading it. However, to others it may have a completely different feel and may contain a lot of importance. By this I mean that the "quality" of this book depends on the reader. For me, it was hard to relate an object like a motorcycle to obstacles in life. To get certain ideas in this book or to understand certain theories the author believes, you have to dig deep and be creative when thinking about them. You have to be open to abstract ideas. This book made it hard to stay focused because it was so difficult to read that if you didnt understand a theory of the author, you were soon lost in what was going on in the book. The book is very lengthy and repetitive. If its not a type of book you like, I wouldnt recommend that you read it. Others who may enjoy books that take in-depth thinking and unique theories, will really enjoy this book. This book takes creative and developed thoughts. Often times you may need to read a page several times before you get the real meaning behind the book. And to add to that, to get the full meaning of the book, it may take several times of reading the book to understand it fully. If you like tough reads that take a lot of thinking, this book is for you.

Life Changing!!!!

Wow ... Well - after having read this book now 5 times, I must say how thought provocating it is, and yet it remains a real milestone in modern literature as well as arising timeless ideas. Pirsigs journey to Quality interlinked with a father-and-sons journey on a motorcycle, haunted by a former self trying to define quality. Got me into deep thinking, I can say it even changed my life, and really got me into philosophy! 5 stars easily!!

One of the most remarkable books of our time!!

I would not like to say that everyone should read this, it requires a certain amount of knowledge to understand what Mr Pirsig is saying, but I would say that it is a brilliant book which even an amateur could follow. I would not say it changed my life but It was a relief to find I am not insane and to think as this man does is not a sin. Not only does he show the finer points of philosophy but he embarks on the true meaning of quality. I found it extemely easy to read and felt compelled to finish it. I also have his second book, Lila, an enquiry into morals, I find that a little harder to read, although it has been said that this is the bible for the 90s. I have to say that Zen and the art of Motorcycle maintenance is one of the best books I have ever read, if not THE best. Many people search for enlightenment in different ways, reading this book was like waking up to a sunny day and smelling clean, fresh air for the first time.
