I dont often relentlessly urge people to "buy this book!", but Jeffrey Zeldmans Designing with Web Standards is one of the best web design books Ive read in ages. Its well-argued and contains easy to follow (Id say idiot-proof, but...). Follow the guidelines in this book and not only will your web pages be forward compatible (compatible with standards-driven browsers of the future), but theyll also be more widely accessible and, most importantly, theyll load much, much faster. A week with this book and I was building pages one quarter the size of my originals (i.e. four times faster loading). Again: Buy this book!

Designing with Web Standards

An excellent book written by a designer for designers and other people who care about what the web should be. Zeldman is passionate about web standards, but does not proselytize. He knows that in a real world some compromises must be made, but points the way to creating forward compatible (and as backward compatible as possible) websites.
