A totally new way of eating
I read this book in July 2003 after a decade of struggling with various low fat, high carb diets losing and gaining the same 1 stone over and over again. Although sceptical at first, I found it incredibly easy to read and the scientific theories on insulin production seemed to make sense. I decided to give it a go for two weeks to see if it worked. The diet itself is not as restrictive as Atkins but it certainly works quickly and effectively. After the first two weeks I had lost 9lbs and was feeling better than I had in a long time. I kept going and lost all my excess weight and have kept it off for several months now with little difficulty. The book includes so many great recipes and quantities of foods allowed are as generous as you wish so you truly are never hungry. This is something I cannot say about any low cal diet I have ever tried. Charles Clark explains the science behind the diet in a clear and unpatronising way which is definitely more geared towards the UK market than most other low carb books. I would definitely recommend anyone to give the book and the diet a try.

Diets have never been this good
A fairly fit runner and walker Id never been able to shake of the extra stone of fat round the thighs, bum etc.

This book recommended to me by 4 seriously slimmed down friends works. I lost just under a stone, in all the right places in 3 weeks

The philosophy makes sense, the recipes are simple and delicious.

Great benefits. First time in my life I have given up coffee and had no side effects! Are caffeines addictive qualities excacerbated by too much sugar in the body?

A couple of shortcomings. On the carbohydrates measurement chart for nuts I suspect there is a typo and the carbohydrates levels are for 10 grams not 100...this means you could seriously over indulge (see almonds as an example)

Side effects include slower energy release when doing serious fitness work (understandable as the body is converting fat rather than carbs)

On some days badbreath can be an issue if you take a lot of dairy fats

Hints: Eat lots of carrots. Long term use of the diet (10 weeks plus) without the necessary vitamins the evidence would suggest that your eyesight might suffer

Basically this is a terrific diet. Give the man a medal!

Good book... it works... but one flaw
This book is well written, easy to read and relevant to a British audience. More than that, it works. Ive lost a stone in 6 weeks and feel better for it!

The diet is divided into two stages: weight loss and maintenance. The weight loss phase is by no means NO carb... bread is allowed! However the author doesnt really devote a lot of time to explaining how readers can transition to the maintenance phase successfully. As a result, some people may be scared to start re-introducing carbs into their diets. Maybe hell bring out Part II to deal with this.

All in all, worth buying.
