The Aphasia Therapy File
There are a number of useful books available for Speech & Language Therapists but this one, ‘The Aphasia Therapy File’, differs from the majority by appreciating the needs of practising clinicians. The File contains a collection of language and communication therapy interventions for aphasia commenting on real clients that have undergone Speech & Language Therapy. These contributions have been made by practising clinicians who are in the best position to understand the challenges therapists face. As a result, the studies are honest in approach, detailing not only the successes but also making recommendations for alternative methods where therapy wasn’t successful. Such an approach is to be commended, enabling us to benefit from the experience of others and make changes in our own methods of therapy.

The studies included are mainly impairment-based in approach following psycholinguistic models of processing. Therefore, each study clearly indicates aims, rationale, assessment, therapy and outcomes. Functional aspects of communication are mentioned but this does not appear to be a primary aim of this particular edition. Therefore, in order to complement this resource, I suggest reading ‘Beyond Aphasia: Therapies for living with Communication Disabilities‘ (Carole Pound et al) to ensure we, as clinicians, do not lose sight of our end goal: to support people with aphasia as they attempt to communicate socially in their everyday lives outside the clinic.

Each contribution is clearly written, logically organised and well presented. Consequently, students of Speech & Language Therapy may benefit from such structured and detailed explanations. In my opinion, this book offers a fresh perspective on therapy interventions for aphasia and is money well spent. I welcome this novel approach and look forward to a second edition containing a further selection of studies.

This book is for those who have no knowledge of the sciences
As a long-time shooter, a combat soldier and a chemical engineer, I found this book wanting. The various studies looked impressive, but there is little substance. Nowhere in this book is there a mechanism postulated, derived, quantified and qualified for the "stopping power" phenomenon.

The data gathering technique is flawed. Too detailed to go into here. but the bottom line is this, a set of crunched numbers (statistically analyzed) mean nothing without a justifying mechanism. At most it shows relations or correlations and these effects could be entirely coincidental.

The bottom line is that while the data were taken from the "street" results, the data collection is flawed because the authors and other collaborators failed to include all of the shootings in a particular caliber and make.

Also, its ludicrous to think that a handgun round would actually stop somebody 90+% of the time when shot into the torso area.

The statistical analysis to be interpreted meant that if the same population of people have been resurrected in exactly the same situations and scenarios and been shot again at exactly the same places, then the chances of they being stopped is at whatever percentage that particular caliber and load is. These numbers dont mean that they can be extrapolated to populations beyond of those studied.

Excellent step-by-step process guided by a professional
Russ Smith has done an exceptional job informing readers of the hiring process of most federal law enforcement agencies. Resume, SF171, OF612, and KSA construction is detailed at length. Agency hiring trends, budget restraints, entry-level positions, and human resources approaches to interpreting applications are an added bonus to this reader friendly book. The author doesnt lead the reader to believe that there is a job waiting for them rather that if the proper course of action is followed and the application is well written there is career opportunity in this profession.
