Good quality, easy to use device |
|
The router and wireless card come bundled together. Installing the router is simplicity itself - the UK specific instructions are included in the box, and within a matter of minutes it is all working, connecting to the Internet and registering your products. (Note that you should make a note of the serial number of the Wireless LAN card *before* you start so that you can register it at the same time). The Web based front end is very straightforward to use - a quick read of the manual guides you in what you need to do to keep the system secure, but in essence it is just changing the default passwords, etc., to something non-default (and remembering to enable WEP if you want to keep the wireless side semi-secure). The firewall interface is essentially quite simple where access is granted to specific source machines, and thats it. For the majority of users this is all that is required. All in all, I am extremely happy with it, and having fun writing the review using my wireless LAN!

Linksys ADSL Modem Gateway w/4-port switch |
After waiting several days for the box to arrive, it only took five minutes to configure and connect. It comes with a good manual, explaining exactly how to configure the device and making it good for ADSL newbies. Two issues, however. First, although the box gives the impression that it would stack on other Linksys devices, this wasnt the case as my Linksys WRT54Gs just wouldnt fit on top. Second, and perhaps more important, is the fact that although the device is being advertised as a router (amongst other things), it is permanently stuck in gateway (NAT) mode which means that you cannot use more than one fixed IP addresses for going onto the Internet. So, if you plan to host more than one Linux box (or any other servers, using the standard ports) then dont bother with this device! In summary, three stars - good for the average ADSL user but definately not for those with more advanced requirements or those who plan to use more than one fixed IP address in future.

It Works with LINUX |
At last, I no longer have problems with my LINUX system. After a little time was spent configuring the modem/router it worked well. It does configure with Mozilla. DHCP could have more options and I wish that I could save the config. But besides that the product works well. So if your looking for a switch / router / modem then look at this. for info: My ISP is Onetel and it works fine.
